This interview was conducted with John Connolly shortly after the union he was president of, the International Brotherhood of Bookbinders, merged with the Lithographers and Photoengravers International Union to form the Graphic Arts International Union (GAIU). Mr. Connolly describes his early work experience as a bookbinder, the strike of 1921 which affected the entire printing industry, and the effect of changing technology and mergers. The latter part of the interview is devoted to a description of the development of the Bookbinders International. The interview concludes with a discussion of the events which led up to the merger in 1972.
